As I’m slowly moving some of my posts from my old blog and rewriting them before republishing here, I’m coming across some funny little things I wrote about the kids back then.I found this post from 26th of July 2009 (the day before my 35th birthday).I thought it was quite apt as now we have moved to a house, we are having the conversation about pets come up near enough every day as we pass a pet shop on our way to school. In this post me and the ex were still together (we split up the following year), so he’ll be referred to as the husband.Kieran would have been 7 (now 12), Cat would have been almost 4 (now almost 9) and Mouse would have been 17 months (now 6).
Recently we have been discussing pets after Kip brought home a book on Gerbils from school to read. When I was 11/12 I had two gerbils, Smokey and Bandit so after we read the book we discussed how I looked after them and what they lived in and what I fed them.
Now we don’t have pets and for 3 reasons:
1.Kip and the husband are allergic to fur.
2.We live in a flat ,so room is very limited.
3.I would rather the kids were a bit older so they can take some responsibility on looking after them.
Now, because of reasons 1 and 2 the choice of pets rules out a lot of animals.Personally, I loved having a dog when I was younger but I would prefer a cat but because of all the above reasons that rules that out.So we are left with fish, spiders and reptiles.Fish are ok, but you can’t take them out of the tank and pet them and well, they’re fish and they don’t do a whole lot.
Spiders then? Ho hum, I loved to have them, but the husband has arachnophobia (he can handle teeny ones) and the thought of one of the older kids getting it out and letting Mouse play with it, doesn’t bear thinking about.
What about reptiles? Now, when I first met the husband he had an albino corn snake.A beautiful creature which was fascinating to watch it feed. The husband decided to sell the snake when Kip was about 18 months as we had no where in the flat that would be safe and out of reach of Kip.At the time the husband kept it in Kip’s room on the floor and shut the door during the day.But Kip moved into a toddler bed at 18 months so this was no longer an option to keep him in there.
I then opened up the conversation to the kids in passing what they would like as a pet when we eventually got moved into a house.I think Kip was drawn to the gerbils, I explained my preference to them rather than a hamster.Cat stated to say what she liked. Now she doesn’t have the greatest of vocabulary for a nearly 4-year-old but we understand her and I think she’s picked up my rambling habits.
She said, “I want an itchy wow wow”.
I thought about it and presumed she didn’t understand what we were talking about so I asked her again what animal she would like as a pet.She told me a bit more insistently and with hand gestures,
“Itchy wow wow”.
I looked at her still puzzled.”What’s that?”, I asked.
So she started to describe the animal she looked like she was walking along with a bag and I couldn’t for the life of me think what she meant.Any way, I diverted the conversation as I could see that she was upset that I couldn’t understand her. Then just a couple of days a go we were watching Outtake TV.A picture came up that had been pixellated and you had to guess who it was.As the picture was revealed it showed Paris Hilton carrying her dog in a handbag.Cat shouted and pointed at the screen,
“Itchy wow wow! Itchy wow wow”.
Then the penny dropped, she wanted a Chihuahua!
