For the second year running we went to Bristol VegfestUK on Saturday, the festival’s fourth year at The Harbourside Amphitheatre.It was a glorious warm day, temperatures reaching a balmy 20ºc.We had originally planned to go on the Sunday but as rain was forecast we switched days.We didn’t know until we arrived at the train station in Chippenham that no trains were running due to the engineering works to electrify the railway.Something that’s going to hinder our Summer holiday plans.We travelled to Bath via coach, arriving an hour later before getting the train from Bath to Bristol.As I don’t drive and we’re used to travelling via bus and train, it didn’t spoil our journey.Me and Cat on the coach Me eating a marshmallow lolly with Cat and Mouse
Bristol VegfestUK opened at 11am, so when we arrived just before 3 it was already heaving with visitors.As I learnt last year it’s easy to want to buy from every single stall or sign up to subscriptions for magazines.I held back on a vast majority of products as I wanted to go away and think about it.Lots of stalls selling products had special offers, which did tempt me but we came away with a lot less this year and I only signed up to one magazine subscription.

As we’ve been eating more and more vegan products since Kip was diagnosed with allergies for life, it is getting easier and easier to find either replacement products for egg and cheese (Kip isn’t allergic to cheese by the way) and our diet has broadened.Since going to Bristol VegfestUK last year we discovered Ananda vegan marshmallow mix, used for the marshmallow lollies we bought along with caramel layers and covered with chocolate and sprinkles, we happily consumed.I’m going to have to give these a go at home as they were scrumptious.Not being conventional, we followed our sweet treat with a couple of pies from Clive’s Pies.One was creamy mushroom and another was lentil and olive, which we devoured with great gusto.I’ll be looking out for these in our local Holland and Barratt.As well as many convenience food products, they were fresh food stalls ranging from raw cakes, food from around the world and good old chips.We really wanted to try the big arse wraps, even at £7 a pop, the queue was long for them.We opted for vegan style paella, two large cartons between me and the older kids.Mouse opted for Hippy Chips, which were thrice baked.Tucking into Clive’s Pies Big arse wraps Raw cakes from Paradise Unbakery Raw pizza
I would have loved to try Paradise Unbakery goods but the prices were too high for me.A slice of raw pizza was £4.Her stall looked absolutely exquisite with colourful cakes too.We followed the vegan paella and chips with a smoothie, which Kip and Cat had to pedal for.Vegan Paella with shiitake & oyster mushrooms, red & yellow peppers, courgettes, chopped toms, butternut squash, sweet paprika, onions, garlic, Mediterranean herbs, Maratelli rice and saffron
There didn’t seem be a lot for the kids to do this year.We couldn’t find last year’s craft tent nor was there the musical instruments or the lovely hula hoop lady.The kids however loved the vegan pancake session with Captain James Tea Cook (or here on Facebook).He was highly entertaining, he’d be awesome at kids parties or festivals.
As we had the reverse journey of train before catching a coach, we actually left an hour earlier than we wanted.We still didn’t get home until 8.All in all it wasn’t a bad day at Bristol VegfestUK 2015, the cancelled trains just made our day shorter.Over 14,000 visitors went over the three days, bringing together vegans in a friendly family atmosphere.Entrance was free for under 16’s and £3 for adults.
I’ve been sent and bought a fair few vegan food and beauty products over the past few months, these will be put in a blog post of monthly round ups.The vegan market has really gone big the last couple of years, groups like the Facebook Veganuary group and Vegan Life magazine, it’s getting easier to go vegan and stay vegan.
