The Dangers of Sky Lanterns and Balloon Releases
Sadly, many people don’t realise once the sky lanterns are released into the atmosphere they can cause detrimental damage to birds either by ingestion, entrapment or entanglement which leads to death. But it’s just not birds like this beautiful owl below, cattle are at risk of swallowing parts which can cause internal bleeding, which can lead to death.Other animals can become entrapped whilst struggling to break free which results in starvation and death.

Sky lanterns are also a risk to yourselves and your property as there is a fire risk to sheds and houses and there is a risk of you ending up in hospital after burning yourself. The Don’t Let Go! campaign has resulted in a complete ban on balloon releases in some parts of America, The Keep Wales Tidy group are campaigning for the same.

Under the Environmental protection act it is unlawful to knowingly drop litter en mass and can result in a £1,000 fine if successfully taken to the courts. There are biodegradable alternatives to balloons but these take up to a year to decompose which means there are still an environmental hazard and are not endorsed by any environmental group.
If you want to celebrate an event or remember someone’s life there are alternatives :
- Float flowers down a stream, river or throw them into the sea.
- Light a candle, but not in a stream or river.
- Blow bubbles.
- Have a minute’s silence.
- Plant a tree or flower bed.
- Have a virtual balloon race.
